What are the three different ways to render a wall?

  1. 1

Remove any old render and paint Use a cold chisel that is just sharp enough to scrape, chip, or scrape away any bumps, dripping render, paint, or mortar that has become stuck to the wall. The old render may flake off at times, and you should scrape it all away before applying the new render. Continue chipping away at the wall until the stone or brickwork is smooth. [1]

  2. 2

Using a stiff-bristled broom, scrub down the wall. Work the broom over the wall's surface, making sure to remove any dirt or debris that may be on it. Remove any organic material that has grown on the wall, such as moss or mold. Continue to sweep the broom against the wall until it is clean. [2] You can also use soap to break up the material.

  3. 3

Using a hose, saturate the wall. Spray the surface of your wall with a garden hose. This will keep your rendering mortar's water from drying out. This is especially true when rendering porous materials such as sandstone. [3]

  4. 4

Place drop cloths all around the wall. Drop cloths will keep dripping render from hardening on the ground near the wall. Tape the drop cloths to the ground so they don't move around while you work. Drop cloths will save you from having to chip away at dripping render later on. [4]

    • If you don't have drop cloths, tarps, cardboard, or garbage bags will suffice.

  1. 1

Get the render mortar. Render mortar can be purchased online or at a hardware store. Choose a render mortar in the color you want to use for the wall. The instructions on the back of the packaging will specify how much water to mix with the water. [5]

    • Gray, off-white, green, blue, and yellow are examples of render colors. You can also personalize your render by combining colors.
  2. 2

Fill a bucket or wheelbarrow with water. Fill a bucket or wheelbarrow with the appropriate amount of water. 8 liters (2 gallons) of water is typically required for 20kg (44 lbs) of render mortar. [6]

  3. 3

Pour the mortar into the bucket and combine it. Before carefully pouring the render mortar into the water, place the bucket or wheelbarrow on a flat surface. To begin, combine the render mortar and water with a hoe or shovel, then switch to a paddle mixer attached to a power drill. Mix the render until it is lump-free and stiff enough to stick to a trowel. When the render is completely mixed, it should be thick and paste-like.

    • To quickly and efficiently mix the render mortar, rent a mixing drill or mechanical concrete mixer from a hardware store.
    • Remember to rinse your tools after mixing the mortar to prevent the render from hardening on them.

Using a trowel, smear the render onto the wall. Place the render mortar on a trowel and firmly press it into the wall. Spread the render up, towards the top of the wall, in one solid motion. Continue to apply the first coat of render to the wall, making sure that the coats are as even as possible. [7]

    • The first coat of render should be about 5mm thick.
    • Keep the bucket of render as close to the wall as possible so that any drips land on the drop cloths.
  2. 2

To level out the render, use a straight edge. To even out the surface of the render, scrape it with a straight edge from a plank of wood. Work your way up the wall from the bottom to the top until the render is level with the surface. [8]

    • Use an aluminum bar or a 2x4 foot (60). 96x121 as your flat edge
  3. 3

Scratch the surface of the render with a scratching comb. A scratching comb is a comb-like tool with spikes at the handle's end. A scratching comb can be purchased in a hardware store or online. Create even depressions in your wall as you move from left to right. Repeat this process until the entire wall has been scratched with the comb. [9]

    • The scratching comb will create depressions in the wall that will aid in the adhesion of the second coat of render.
  4. 4

Allow two hours for the first layer of render to dry. Within 30 minutes, the first layer of render should begin to harden and adhere to the wall. After this time, check the dryness, but expect it to take about two hours to completely dry. This layer must adhere to the wall before the second coat can be applied. [10]

  5. 5

Finish the wall with a second coat of render. The second render layer should be 10mm thick. Apply the second layer of render in the same manner as the first, using a trowel to spread it from bottom to top. [11]

  6. 6

Allow the render to dry for 30 minutes before evening it out again. Allow the render to stiffen before leveling out the second layer with a flat edge or a float. This step is known as floating, and it will help you flatten any raised areas and fill in any depressions left by the second layer of render. [12]

  7. 7

For a smooth finish, sponge down the render. Wipe down the surface of the render with a damp sponge if you want a smooth finish. To avoid leaving scratches on your wall, clean and squeeze out the sponge as it becomes dirty. Go over the entire wall until the render is evenly finished. [13]

    • To give the render a brushed finish, use a soft bristled brush instead of a sponge.
    • This can be done while the render is still wet.
  8. 8

Allow the wall to dry for 24 hours before moistening it with water. Allow the wall to dry for 24 hours before misting it with room temperature water from a spray bottle once a day. The addition of moisture to the render prevents it from drying out and cracking. Your rendered wall should be completely cured and finished after five days. [14]
