What exactly is a card reader?
A card reader is a security device that is essential for all customers who wish to maximize the benefits of Online Banking. It collaborates with your Online Banking service to provide an additional layer of protection against online fraud.
Upon Online Banking registration, a card reader will be dispatched to you automatically and should arrive within 3-5 working days.
Utilizing biometric approvals on your mobile app
You also have the option to enroll for biometric approvals on your mobile app. This feature grants you the ability to authorize specific transactions within Online Banking without using a card reader. Certain criteria must be met.
Here are a few important points to consider about biometric approvals:
- This service is not accessible to customers under the age of 16. Moreover, there are a few Android devices that may not be compatible. If your device is incompatible, we apologize for the inconvenience, but you will not be able to utilize the biometric approval feature.
- Immediate registration and usage of face biometrics may not be available for everyone. However, you can still use Online Banking and your card reader as usual. We will notify you as soon as biometric approvals become available to you.
When will you need a card reader or biometric approval?
There may be instances when you will require a card reader or, if registered for biometric approvals, your mobile app, when accessing Online Banking. Additionally, these devices are necessary for completing certain tasks, including:
- Making your first online payment.
- Modifying your daily payment limits for Online Banking, the Mobile app, and Open Banking.
- Creating or modifying a payee, which includes changing the payment reference.
- Updating personal information, such as your mobile number, email address, PIN, and password.
Please be aware that we will never contact you and request your card reader details over the phone.
Carry out everyday banking without a card reader
Even without a card reader, you can still conduct payments and manage regular transactions using the mobile app anytime and anywhere. If you have enrolled for biometric approvals through your mobile app, you can also utilize your biometrics to authorize Online Banking transactions. Certain criteria must be met.
The application is accessible to customers aged 11 who are using compatible iOS or Android devices and possess a UK or international mobile number in specific countries. Customers aged 16 and over who are eligible for the mobile app are able to utilize biometric approvals.
When initiating a payment, there may be personal limits that apply. To manage your personal daily limits, you can utilize Online Banking.
To request a replacement card reader, you can do so through Online Banking. Please allow a timeframe of 3-5 working days for the delivery of the card reader.
Alternatively, if you have registered for biometric approvals on your mobile app, you can also utilize your biometrics to authorize transactions within Online Banking.
In the scenario where you do not have a debit card for your account, we will send you an Online Banking card (known as a CAP card) and a PIN that can be used with the card reader. Please allow up to 15 working days for these to be delivered.
If you have registered on your mobile app, you can also use biometrics to authorize select transactions within Online Banking and the mobile app.
If you encounter a message on your card reader stating 'BATTERY LOW' or 'NO POWER', the card reader will cease functioning after a few more uses. You have the option to replace the batteries or order a new card reader.
However, if you have registered on your mobile app, you can also use biometrics to authorize certain transactions within Online Banking and the mobile app.
