The Partygate scandal has dealt another blow to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, with the release of Sue Gray's report that unveils the full extent of Covid-19 lockdown rule breaches in Downing Street. The report raises multiple questions about the conduct of No 10. Johnson is set to address the findings in a Downing Street press conference today, the 25th of May 2022. The announcement will showcase the Minister's accountability, and the live event will be broadcasted on Sky News and the BBC News channel. The report is an outcome of an internal investigation launched following reports in the media of gatherings in or near Downing Street during the pandemic. Gray expressed that there were "failures of leadership and judgment in No 10 and the Cabinet Office" for which "the senior leadership at the centre, both political and official, must bear responsibility." The report states that junior civil servants were led to believe that their attendance at such events was acceptable, given the involvement of senior staff. However, Gray also states that she firmly believes that such events did not reflect the prevailing culture in Government and the Civil Service at the time.
Just before PMQs today, the full report was released, and shortly after the Prime Minister addressed the House of Commons to apologize. He has taken full responsibility for everything that happened on his watch, but he stated that Downing Street staff were "doing their best" to help the country through the pandemic. Johnson hopes to renew his apology and clear the air on the controversy during the press conference at 3:30 pm.
