The 9-Step Process (with Illustrations) for Altering a UPVC Door Lock
-
1
Determine the type of lock you have. Because upvc door locks come in a variety of styles, try to identify the brand of the lock on your door first. Avocet, Fulltex GU Ferco, Mila, Roto, and Yale are a few examples of popular brands. Knowing the brand of the lock will be extremely helpful in locating a replacement lock.
- Upvc door locking points are available in a variety of styles (hook, deadbolt, pins, etc.). ) Regardless of the complexity and style of the locking point, the lock cylinder is typically the universal component of the lock that is replaced.
-
2
Lock and unlock your door. Open your door enough to see the inside edging and the side of the lock faceplate. To detach the lock, you must have complete access to the side of the lock faceplate.

Check the size of your lock. Typically, two standard reference points are used to size and measure upvc locks. The first measurement is taken from the center of the circular keyhole on the front of the door up to the center of the square spindle (the connection point where the door handle is located). This is known as the PZ measurement. The second measurement is taken from the center of the keyhole's circular portion to the edge of the lock plate (the exposed plating on the inside edging of the door). This is known as the backset measurement.
- Some locks have two spindle holes, but the measurement should always be taken from the upper spindle hole.
- The backset is commonly measured in millimeters, while the PZ is measured in millimeters.
- The length of the locking cylinder may vary depending on the width of the door. To determine the length of the cylinder, take a horizontal measurement across the width of the door, from one keyhole to the other (interior keyhole to exterior keyhole).

1
Remove the retaining screw. The retaining screw is usually located in the faceplate on the side of the door, even with the bottom of the lock cylinder and keyhole. [1] Twist the retaining screw to the left with a screwdriver, loosen it, and remove it from the faceplate.
- This screw holds the lock in place.
- The lock cylinder is the portion of the lock that is located within the door. The encasing into which the key is inserted via the keyhole.
-
2
Put the key into the lock. Once the key is in the lock, turn it about 10 degrees to the right or left. Your turn will differ depending on which side of the door you are on. You're only turning the key about 10 degrees to align the cam (the inner latch of the lock) with the body of the lock and smoothly remove the lock cylinder.
- This part requires some trial and error, so try turning the key in both directions.
-
3
Remove the cylinder. Try gently wiggling and tugging on the key while it's inserted in the lock and turned to both the right and left positions. [2] With moderate tugging, the lock cylinder should begin to come loose in one of the turn positions. Pull the cylinder toward you once it has come loose from its socket.
-
4
Insert the new key into the new cylinder. Now that the original lock cylinder has been removed, remove the key from it and insert it into the new lock cylinder.
- Only with the key inside the new lock cylinder can it be secured.
-
5
Change the lock. Turn the new cylinder's key until the lock cam is flush with the cylinder's body. The cam must be flush with the cylinder body in order to fit back into the empty socket smoothly. Insert the new cylinder completely into the socket, just as the old cylinder was. Turn the key slightly to allow the lock cam to properly position itself within the socket. Keep the key inside the lock.
- You're essentially going backwards from the steps you took to remove the original lock cylinder.
-
6
Replace the retaining screw in the lock faceplate. Replace the retaining screw in the screw hole. With a screwdriver, twist the screw to the right and reinstall it.
- Turn the key a few times to the right and left to test the lock, and gently tug on the key when it is turned to both the right and left positions. This checks to see if the lock cylinder is properly secured.
- Remove the key from the lock only after the retaining screw has been reinstalled.

Question
Can I install a used door on an existing frame?
Yes, I do have one like that now. Simply keep track of where all of the holes and hinges intersect. In most cases, you can simply drill new holes and relocate the hinges, but it's sometimes better (and easier) to simply purchase a different (but not necessarily new) door.
-
Question
We installed a new lock, but when we lock it, the key will not come out. What should I do?
Return the lock to the store where you purchased it. The lock has a flaw.
-
Question
What should I do if the threading on the holding screw is damaged? How do I remove the lock and screw?
Purchase a set of screw extractors, which are special drill bits designed to extract screws. They can be purchased at home improvement stores, major hardware stores, or online. A drill with reverse capability is also required.
