You will require high-quality silicone sealant for bathroom applications that includes an anti-fungal additive. Make sure that the sealant is compatible with the type of material you are working with, especially if the floor and walls are covered with natural stone. To apply the sealant evenly, you will need a sealant application gun and a silicone sealant application tool that is specifically designed to remove excess sealant. Additionally, keep paper towels handy to clean excess sealant.
1. Dry the Area
Ensure that the shower tray and walls are completely dry and free of dirt and dust before applying the sealant.
2. Choose the Right Size of Aperture
If you are using a tool to smooth out the sealant, be sure to select the appropriate aperture size to achieve a consistent bead that covers the gap between the tiles and tray adequately.
3. Cut the Nozzle
Angle the application nozzle at a 45-degree angle and cut it at a size appropriate for your needs. The nozzle will have marks indicating where to trim. The typical size for applications is 5mm, but it can be adjusted to create a wider bead.
4. Apply Evenly
Begin in the inner corner of the shower tray, apply gentle pressure to the application gun's trigger, and work your way towards the front of the tray in one continuous movement. Ensure you apply an even bead of silicone, taking care not to use too much.
5. Fill the Gaps
The silicone sealant should cover the gap between the tray and tiles. Carefully add more sealant to the area if you notice any visible gaps in the bead.
6. Wipe Away Excess
Release the pressure from the application gun after each sealant line and wipe away any excess sealant. Be sure to replace the cap on the nozzle.
7. Smooth Out
Place the smoothing tool against the tray and tiles and gradually apply even pressure to remove excess sealant along the length of the tray. Be careful not to over-smooth the sealant, causing it to tear or adhere incorrectly.
8. Leave to Dry
Leave the fresh silicone sealant for a minimum of 24 hours before use to let it dry completely.
