Obtaining a Makro Card as an Individual

Looking to acquire a Makro card without being involved in a business? Here's a little trick for you...

Makro, one of the leading wholesale establishments in the United Kingdom, has recently merged with the Booker group.

To obtain a Makro card, you will now need to register through Booker. It appears that both companies are utilizing a shared customer database, granting access to both Booker and Makro wholesale locations.

Unlike the process of obtaining a Costco card, becoming a Makro customer requires you to either be a business entity or a charitable organization. However, we have discovered a perfectly legitimate workaround.

The solution to bypassing the necessity of a Makro card in order to shop at Makro is to make your purchases online.

When shopping online at Makro, there is no need to provide any form of identification or submit proof of business affiliation.

This implies that you can take advantage of the fantastic bulk trade deals offered to Makro customers, even if you are not associated with a business.

You don't need a Makro card to shop online.

It is worth noting that there may be certain in-store promotions for which you are not eligible.

Nevertheless, you may wonder if Makro is truly the ideal choice for personal consumers.

To explore this further, I decided to investigate whether having a Makro membership allows you to purchase food at a lower price compared to the supermarkets. I conducted a comparison between four products sold at Makro and similar items from well-known retailers on our high street.

Being from Yorkshire, I naturally had to examine the price of tea bags. At Makro, a 3kg bag of Yorkshire tea, containing 1,200 tea bags, is priced at £18.49.

With a Makro membership you can buy items in bulk at a reduced cost.

This equates to £0.015 per tea bag.

A brief search on MySupermarket revealed that Morrisons is currently the cheapest store selling Yorkshire Tea, offering 240 tea bags for £4.00. This amounts to £0.016 per tea bag.

Therefore, purchasing 1,200 tea bags from Morrisons would cost £20.00, whereas the price at Makro is £18.49.

Whether it's Halloween or a children's party, Haribo Starmix always tends to be a hit!

The typical price for these bags is around £0.10 each; however, Makro is currently offering a deal where you can get 100 bags for £6.23, making them just £0.06 each.

Before making any decisions, I decided to double-check on MoneySupermarket. As I suspected, the best offer can be found at Tesco, where you can buy 6 bags for £0.50, making them £0.08 each.

Regardless of which option you choose, buying 100 bags at Tesco would cost you £8.33, which is £2.10 more than at Makro.

Although I'm not particularly fond of branded toilet rolls, I knew that using them would be the best way to make a fair comparison. So, I obtained some Andrex toilet roll from Makro.

It's a family pack containing 16 rolls and it costs £7.79, which comes out to £0.48 per roll.

However, there is currently an offer at Tesco where you can get a pack of 18 rolls for just £6.00. This works out to be £0.33 per roll and saves you £2.76 for every 18 rolls purchased.

Out of the three items, Makro offered the cheapest prices for two, while the supermarkets had the lowest price for one.

However, personally, I find the process of shopping around quite tedious. Going from Makro to Morrisons to Asda, and so on, would be a waste of time (not to mention the petrol expenses) for the savings I would receive.

To make one final comparison, I decided to compare baskets.

I chose to purchase:

- 18 rolls of Andrex Toilet Rolls

- 1,200 Yorkshire Tea Bags

- 100 Haribo Star Mix bags
