How to Move a Radiator: Is It Easy?

The ease of moving a radiator depends on several factors, including your knowledge of plumbing and heating systems and your willingness to commit to the task. While you'll require a licensed plumber's assistance with the pipework, moving a radiator is manageable with a little patience.

To relocate a radiator safely and effectively, you will need:

• 1. Turn off the Heating and Valves

The first step is crucial for ensuring your safety while relocating the radiator. You must turn off the central heating and wait for the system to cool to avoid the risk of burns. Turn off the thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) and use a wrench to twist the lock-shield valve clockwise to shut it and isolate the radiator from the rest of the system. Make notes of the number of rotations to the lock-shield valve, which will assist in restoring the radiator's original pressure once reinstalled.

Before draining, turn off the boiler and isolate the electricity supply. If you try draining the system with the electricity supply on, the boiler may trigger or the pump will start, potentially causing the boiler to overheat or burn out.

2. Measure the Radiator and the New Location

Before removing the radiator, measure it in its current position to know the wall space needed when reinstalling it. Ensure to measure the distance between the bottom of the radiator and the floor for the pipework running to and from it.
