/ Methods for Measuring Roller Blinds

The techniques for measuring roller blinds vary depending on whether you are installing them inside or outside the window recess. However, both methods involve taking measurements for width and height, as well as additional measurements inside or outside the window recess.

Acquiring the knowledge of how to measure for roller blinds is a crucial step in the process of buying and installing your new roller blinds.

Methods for Measuring Roller Blinds Inside a Window Recess

Measurement Inside Recess

  • To measure, obtain three measurements across the inside of the window recess - at the top, middle, and bottom of the window - and three measurements vertically on the left, right, and center, as demonstrated above.
  • Make use of the spaces provided in the diagram to record your measurements. Choose 'Recess Size' in the measurement options and input the narrowest width measurement and the shortest height measurement.
  • Please note:  Do not make any adjustments yourself and when ordering roller blinds for a recess fit, remember that:

The fabric width is approximately 30 mm smaller than the final width of the blind.

The final width of the blind - 'actual blind size' - refers to the total width between the pins on either end of the roller cylinder, including the brackets.

Example - For a given recess width of 100cm, the supplied Roller blind will be 100cm wide from Pin to Pin (with only a few mm tolerance), and the fabric width will be 3cm narrower (1.5cm on each side) at roughly 97cms.

    Pointers on Measuring Roller Blinds

  • Use a metal tape measure - fabric tape measures can stretch and provide inaccurate readings.

  • Measure the position where the blind will be installed to ensure it clears any window catches, etc.
  • Take measurements within any tiles or other constraints inside the recess that may affect the final working width of the blind.
  • Measure in centimeters and round each measurement to the nearest 0.1cm. Measure each window individually, even if they appear to be the same size.
  • Methods for Measuring Roller Blinds Outside a Window Recess

    Measurement Outside Recess

  • When fitting a Roller Blind outside a window recess, it is recommended that the blind extends at least 7-10 cm on each side of the recess and approximately 7 to 10cm (whenever feasible) above and below, to ensure proper coverage when the blind is closed.
  • If the window sill protrudes more than 5cms from the recess, the blind may need to be stopped at sill level instead of extending below it since this could impede the smooth operation of the blind.
  • Take note of the newly calculated measurement in the designated spaces on the diagram and select 'Actual Blind Size' from the measurement options dropdown.
  • Important: Please keep in mind when ordering recess fit roller blinds that:

The fabric width is roughly 30 mm smaller than the finished width of the blind.

The finished width of the blind - referred to as the 'actual blind size' - includes the total width between the pins at each end of the roller cylinder, including the brackets.

Example - If the 'actual blind size' width is given as 100cm, the Roller blind supplied will be 100cm wide from Pin to Pin (with a few mm tolerance) and the fabric width will be 3cm narrower (1.5cm on each side), approximately 97cm.

Useful Guidelines for Measuring Roller Blinds

  • It is recommended to use a metal tape measure - fabric ones can stretch and provide inaccurate readings.
  • Measure in centimetres and round each measurement to the nearest whole cm.
  • Measure each window individually, even if they appear to be the same size.
  • Blinds Within Window Recess

Determining how to measure for roller blinds will depend on whether they will be installed inside or outside a window recess. A window recess is present when the window does not align with the surrounding wall. Recess blinds are specifically designed to fit within the window recess, sitting snugly inside the window opening without overlapping onto the wall.

To accurately measure for recess blinds, you will need to measure the width and drop of the window recess. We will slightly reduce the measurements to ensure a smooth fit without any snagging or obstruction. On the other hand, outside recess blinds are designed to be installed outside the window recess, overlapping onto the wall. Both options have their own advantages, and your choice may depend on the specific room and intended purpose.
