"Mastering Samsung Galaxy S22 and S21 Screenshots: Unleashing the Power of Smart Select Options with , , , and Tags"
Ever since the S8 launched and Samsung did away with the physical home key, the method for taking a screenshot on their handsets has changed. However, with modern Samsung Galaxy S devices such as the S22 series, taking a screenshot may lead to launching Bixby or even loading the power-off screen instead.
So how can you capture what's on your Samsung Galaxy S21, S22, or even older devices like the S9, S10 or S20? Samsung has added a few features to make it a little more interesting than using an average Android device! Here's how to do it:
- Galaxy S21 or S22 screenshot using buttons
- Taking a screenshot using button presses is the traditional Android method that Samsung supports, and here's how to do it:
- Make sure you have the content you want to capture on your screen.
Press the volume down and standby/power button (located on the right-hand side of your device) at the same time, but briefly. This will capture the screen, which will flash and be saved in the "screenshots" album/folder in your gallery. However, if you’re using older hardware such as the Galaxy S7 or earlier, these devices use a combination of the standby and home buttons instead.
For all Galaxy S series devices, make sure it's only a quick press of the two buttons. Holding them down will launch the power control screen instead.
One unique feature of Samsung Galaxy S devices is the screenshot toolbar. Previously known as smart capture, it allows even more options for your screenshots without having to leave your gallery. Here's how to use it:
Make sure the toolbar feature is turned on in your settings menu, under Advanced Features> Screenshots and Screen Recorder> Show toolbar after capturing. You'll get additional options at the bottom of the page in a banner after screenshotting using buttons or palm swipe. You can draw, crop, or share with others directly from the banner, but the most useful feature is the scroll capture, marked by down-facing arrows. Tap this to include all the parts of the display that you can see, such as a long webpage.

From the same settings menu, you can also select to delete your original screenshot after sharing it from the toolbar, under Delete after sharing from toolbar.
If you're looking for another method of capturing a screenshot, Samsung offers gesture control features that allow you to do so easily. Here are the steps to make it work:
In your settings menu, go to Advanced Features> Motions and Gestures> Palm Swipe to Capture. Make sure to toggle this on.
Swipe the side of your hand across the display in a left or right direction to capture the screen. This will flash and be saved in the "screenshots" album/folder in your gallery.
Note that if you've mastered the button-pressing method and don't want to swipe to capture, you can turn off the Palm Swipe feature to prevent accidental screenshot capturing.
This third approach is not a total screenshot solution, but it is an incredibly useful method of capturing data that is displayed using a function referred to as smart select. If you are a prior Note user, some of this may appear familiar.
Smart select is an edge panel that you can swipe to from the edge of the screen when enabled, as follows:
Go to settings > display > 'Edge panels,' and make certain that this option is turned on. Go to this menu, and you can activate the smart select edge panel by selecting 'Panels' and scrolling to the right to pick it. You may enable various panel types, such as Apps. Then, proceed to the page from which you want to capture. Swipe from the side of the display to open the edge panel. This may require several swipes if you have multiple panels active. Choose the shape or selection type you prefer - rectangle, oval, pin to screen, or (preferably) generate a gif using 'Animation.' You will return to the capture page with a frame for selecting. Resize or reposition the frame and select 'done.' If generating a gif, record the content, and then stop when finished. You will be presented with what you have captured, with the ability to draw, share, save, and extract text to paste somewhere else. If you select 'pinning a selection,' the captured selection will remain on top of everything until you close it down, which is particularly convenient for information you wish to refer to, such as an address or reference number.
The S21 Ultra has enabled compatibility with the S Pen stylus since its launch, but only for the Ultra model. However, the S22 takes things to a whole new level by incorporating an S Pen into the body. One of the S Pen's most excellent features is making it simple to activate smart select, allowing you to select data using the stylus. Here's how:
Eject the S Pen from the S22 Ultra's body to automatically activate Air Command (it's a pop-up menu). Select 'smart select' from this menu and, as indicated above, create and save your selection. It's a very beneficial characteristic of the S Pen.
