However, wholesalers are quite strict about who can buy goods, only allowing business owners and charities to do so.

What Is Booker Cash & Carry?

Booker is a wholesaler who accepts cash. It provides food to approximately 120,000 retailers across the country.

Booker has 172 depots in the UK, as well as 30 under Makro. Booker also owns the Premier, Budgens, and Londis brands.  

Furthermore, Booker allows small business owners and charities to purchase goods in bulk if they have a Booker card.

The account holder will receive an electronic receipt at some point during the same day or week. They will receive an invoice outlining the cost of the goods as well as the payment terms.  

If you do not have a credit account but have a membership, you can pay in store on the day of purchase.  

Booker Cash & Carry Cards: A Brief History

It is unclear when and where the concept of a cash and carry card became popular.  

Beckman and Engle introduced the concept of a cash & carry card in their 1937 textbook Wholesaling Principles and Practice. They discussed in the book the change in the way goods were sourced in 1920, which resulted in the need for wholesalers.

Following that, the cash and carry card was introduced as a way for businesses to source goods and pay later through net returns.  

Wiseway, a small warehouse in Ramsgate, first opened its doors in 1957. This restaurant followed the principles of a cash and carry wholesaler.  

However, in 1958, L Batley & Co. Huddersfield now has a warehouse and cash and carry. As a result, despite the existence of the book and Wiseway, the concept of a cash and carry card is frequently attributed to a man named Lawrence Bailey.  

Is it possible to obtain a Booker Card without a business?  

No, technically. Yes, technically. It's a little difficult. While you must own a charity or business to open a Booker account, you can be assigned a Booker cash & carry card even if you only work for a charity or business.

However, you will be able to use the card only for business purposes. The use of the Booker cash & carry card for personal purposes is strictly prohibited.  

If this is the case, you will only be referred to as the 'name card holder.' The transaction costs for the goods you purchase will still be invoiced to the account holder.

If you own a business or a charity and have misplaced your cash & carry card, the answer is slightly different, and you may be able to work around the rules.

If you have a business account, a charity account, or are the named cardholder, you can shop at Makro online without entering your credit card information. This assumes you have logged in to your account.  

Are You Able to Get a Booker Cash & Carry Day Pass?

Again, the answer is both yes and no.  

The day pass program allows businesses and traders to try out the wholesale retailer before committing to a cash & carry card.

So, if you are a business owner or trader, you can do this without difficulty. Unfortunately, if you are not a business owner or other relevant person, you will not be able to obtain a day pass.  

Can You Use Another Person's Booker Card?

You could try, but you'd get nowhere. When you apply for a Booker card, you must provide information proving that you are the owner of a charity or business.

Following that, a card with your name and a photograph of you will be issued. You will not be able to use someone else's card unless you look exactly like the account holder.  

However, if you are the designated cardholder for a business, this is possible.  

Can You Get a Booker Cash & Carry Card If You Work For Yourself?

In a nutshell, yes. Even if you are self-employed and do not have a logo or website, you can still request and be eligible for a Booker card, as well as a card for other wholesale retailers.  

As a general rule, you must work under a brand name and file your own tax and expenses with HMRC each year. By doing so, you are considered a self-employed person, a sole trader, or a business.
