Revolutionary advancements have been made in cheque processing. It is now possible for banks and building societies to process payments within one day after cheques have been paid in using a digital image. However, the technology may not be available to all until next Summer. The phase-out of cheques was reversed by MPs, much to the relief of the thousands of Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Barclays customers already enjoying next-day cheque clearing. Some Barclays and Lloyds customers have even been able to pay in cheques via mobile banking apps since 2014. While cheques can still be paid in at banks, building societies, ATMs, and by post, there is a new digital image-based method of cheque processing. Initially, only a small number of cheques will be processed via the new system alongside the old one. But eventually, cheques from all banks will be cleared by the digital system, ensuring faster payment access for customers. For the millions of charities, businesses, and personal customers that still write or receive cheques on a regular basis, the new cheque imaging technology provides a secure, reliable, and efficient payment method.
