Free Method to Verify Car Insurance
Driving without valid insurance is a criminal offense in the United Kingdom. The consequences for such actions can be quite severe.
As of the year 2020, the maximum penalty for driving without insurance is the addition of 6 to 8 penalty points on your driver's license, accompanied by a fine. The fine amount varies and is means-tested, meaning it can reach up to £5,000 depending on your income. In certain cases, there is even the possibility of receiving a driving ban.
If caught driving without insurance, the police have the authority to seize and destroy your vehicle. In extreme instances, if the matter is referred to the courts, an unlimited fine can be imposed. Additionally, you may also face disqualification from driving. These consequences are undoubtedly severe.
How can I verify if my car is insured…?
The most convenient way to determine whether your vehicle is insured is by noting down its registration number. You can cross-reference this number against the national Motor Insurance Database, also known as askMID. This database serves as a comprehensive register of all insured cars in the UK and is accessible to registered insurance companies, as well as authorized entities such as the police and DVLA.
Conducting a search on the motor insurance database is free of charge. However, if you desire additional information such as the name of the insurance provider and specific policy details, a nominal fee may apply.
Here at FreeCarCheck, we do not provide an "insurance check" service since askMID does not resell its data. askMID is managed by the insurance industry itself, and they do not sell access to their database. In short, the only reliable source for determining if a vehicle is insured is to visit the askMID website directly.
Is there a service for car insurance reminders?
Unfortunately, unlike the UK Government's vehicle tax (VED) and MOT checkers, askMID does not offer a reminder service for insurance at the moment.
If you worry about accidentally forgetting to renew your car insurance, your insurer might send you renewal reminders. However, if you're like me, you may overlook these reminders amidst a flood of emails.
Fortunately, MoneySupermarket has devised its own solution. You can download their free app, which will send a notification to your phone the day before your insurance expires. I have personally used their app without any issues, and it's not necessary to purchase insurance through them in order to utilize the reminder feature. Simply input the expiration date of your car insurance, and you will receive automated notifications.
Will the askMID service inform me about insurance write-offs?
No, the askMID service exclusively focuses on verifying the validity of car insurance. For information on whether a vehicle has been involved in an insurance write-off, please refer to our related guide on checking for insurance write-offs.
How can I check if someone else's vehicle is insured?
Similar to checking the insurance status of your own vehicle, you can also verify the insurance of a car owned by someone else. To do so, you must access the motor insurance database. Here are the necessary steps:
- Retrieve the registration number of the vehicle you wish to check.
- Perform a search on the askMID database using the obtained registration number.
- If the vehicle is found in the MID database, the insurance details will be displayed on your screen.
Depending on the level of information required, a nominal fee might be applicable for this service. However, obtaining the name of the insurance company for a vehicle is free of charge.
The motor insurance database serves as a valuable tool for verifying the insurance status of both your own car and vehicles owned by third parties. If you fear that you may have inadvertently let your car insurance lapse, this free service can be used to confirm whether or not your vehicle is insured. In today's world, it is rare to find genuinely useful things that are offered free of charge!
Help! My understanding is that the vehicle I own has valid insurance, but it is claiming otherwise. What course of action should I take?
It may surprise you to know that this is a fairly common issue that many people encounter.
The askMID service, which is responsible for providing insurance information, is regularly updated every few hours. Therefore, it is unlikely that the problem is simply due to a delay in updating the details. To resolve this, the best course of action would be to directly contact the askMID service. Based on our experience, the most likely reason for the discrepancy is an incorrect entry in the system. For instance, it is possible that the vehicle registration number (VRM) was mistakenly entered incorrectly. Unfortunately, FreeCarCheck is unable to assist with any issues related to the askMID service.
Is it legal to purchase a car without insurance?
Absolutely! There is no legal requirement for a car to have insurance at the time of purchase. In fact, most cars that are sold through dealerships often come with a 7-day "drive off" insurance policy. This means that the insurance coverage begins as soon as you drive the vehicle away from the dealership.
However, if you are purchasing a car from a private seller, it is highly unlikely that it would come with any form of 7-day insurance. In such cases, it is essential that you immediately arrange to insure the vehicle after completing the purchase. Do not be one of those individuals who forgets or assumes that it is safe to drive home and insure the car later. Taking such a risk is not advisable. Instead, make it a point to pull over by the roadside immediately after purchasing the car and arrange for insurance coverage over the phone. Yes, it may seem tedious to listen to all the details and terms and conditions from your insurer, along with them asking the same questions. However, this simple step could potentially save your driving license. Remember, you only need to do it once!
