For those considering switching mobile providers, Vodafone offers a PAC code that will allow you to keep your current phone number.
If you're on the Vodafone network and want to leave, or if you're on another network and want to switch to Vodafone, you'll need a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code), which is required to keep your number when switching networks.
And, regardless of which network you're switching to or from, you can obtain your PAC by sending a single text message, making it a quick and easy process.
We'll go over how to get a PAC by text, as well as alternative methods, further down. We'll also look at how to use that PAC to switch from Vodafone to another network, and then how to switch back to Vodafone.
Transferring your number and leaving Vodafone
We've outlined three simple steps for transferring your number to a new network when you leave Vodafone below.
However, as previously stated, the first step is typically to request your PAC code. Don't worry if you've already signed up with a new network. There is still time to obtain your PAC.
However, do not cancel your Vodafone contract until you have ported your number. In fact, the act of porting will cancel your Vodafone account.
Request a Vodafone PAC code in Step 1.
As previously stated, you will need a PAC code to keep your phone number, which you can obtain by sending a text message.
This is the method we recommend because it is quick and easy, but you can also get your PAC code from Vodafone in other ways. Here's how it's done:
- Text to switch - Text PAC and your four-digit account PIN to 65075.
- Online - Log in to your Vodafone account.
- Call 191 from your Vodafone phone.
A PAC code is only valid for 30 days, but if it expires before you use it, you can request a replacement.
Step 2: Purchase a new phone or SIM card.
Now that you have your PAC code, you can place an order with the network to which you want to migrate. So, order the phone or SIM card you want, then wait for it to arrive and activate your temporary new number when it does.
If you ordered a new phone or SIM card before receiving your PAC, that's fine as well - you can do it either way.
And if you're not sure which phone deal or SIM Only plan to choose, take a look at our website, where we collect all of the best deals - including some exclusives.
Step 3: Provide your new network with your Vodafone PAC code.
The final step is to provide your PAC code to the newly joined network. This usually entails filling out a number transfer form, along with a few other details, such as the number you want to keep.
This step is sometimes possible while placing an order for a new phone or SIM, but it is usually necessary to wait until they have arrived and been activated.
In any case, once you've completed this number transfer form, your number can usually be transferred as soon as the next working day - though you'll usually be able to select a later date if you prefer.
When the transfer is finished, your Vodafone account will be closed automatically, and your final bill will be issued. As a result, there is no need to manually close your account.
In terms of how to give your Vodafone PAC code to a new network, In general, you do so from your online account or another web page, but full instructions are provided in the chart below.
Joining Vodafone and changing your phone number
We've already discussed how to transfer your Vodafone number, but what about if you want to join Vodafone?
The procedure is largely the same, and it all begins with obtaining a PAC code from the network you're leaving.
We've outlined the entire three-step process below, but make sure you don't cancel your old plan until the transfer is finished. It will be automatically cancelled once your number is transferred, but if you cancel it before then, you may lose your number.
Step 1: Obtain a PAC code from an existing network.
To keep your number, you must provide Vodafone with a PAC code from the network you are leaving. The simplest way to obtain that PAC code is to text 'PAC' to 65075 (from the number you wish to keep). However, you'll find additional options for most networks listed below.

Questions and Answers
Yes, if you're already with Vodafone and are simply switching to a new plan with the same account, your number should be transferred automatically.
If you do not want to keep your phone number when switching networks, you will need a STAC (Service Termination Authorisation Code) rather than a PAC. Simply text 'STAC' to 75075 from the number you want to leave behind, then give it to your new network.
No, PAC codes are not free, but there may be other costs associated with leaving a network, especially if you are terminating your contract early. Text INFO to 85075 to find out how much you'll have to pay.
The exact time frame will depend on the network you're transferring to, but your number will generally be transferred the following working day if you submit your transfer request before 5pm or 5:30pm (depending on network) the previous working day.
If you submit the transfer form in the evening, on the weekend, or on a holiday, it will usually take two working days. This assumes you want the transfer to happen as soon as possible, but you can usually request a later transfer if you prefer.
Yes, if you don't want to keep your phone number, you don't need a PAC code when terminating a phone contract. Simply notify your network of your intention to cancel your plan, or request a STAC code (by texting 'STAC' to 75075) and provide it to your new network.
When switching between Vodafone plans, there is no need for a PAC; these are only required when switching to a new network.
Before porting your old number to a new network, your phone may display the temporary number you had. In this case, or if any other incorrect number is displayed, simply go to your device's settings screen and manually edit the number.
Often, yes; simply inform the network that you are transferring a call and make the request. However, if you are close to the time when the transfer was supposed to take place, it may be too late.
There are several reasons why your phone number may not have transferred when you expected it to. Possible outcomes include:
- Your new SIM card is not activated: You must activate your new SIM card before you can transfer your old number to it.
- You're not in the UK: If you're not in the country, the transfer will most likely fail. Wait until you return before making the request again.
Another possibility is that the network was simply delayed in transferring your number for reasons beyond your control, so if you're unsure why your number hasn't been transferred, contact your new network and they should be able to assist you.
