F1 Racing Captivates Massive Global Audience in 2019 with 1.9 Billion Viewers
Formula 1 has experienced a third consecutive year of audience growth, both through TV and digital channels. The global TV audience has reached its highest since 2012, with a total cumulative audience of 1.922 billion, representing a 9% increase on last year. The top five markets by audience are Brazil, Germany, Italy, UK, and the Netherlands. There have also been significant increases in Poland (256%) and the Middle East and North Africa (228%). In terms of unique viewers, the sport remained stable in the top 20 markets, but audience numbers decreased globally by 3.9%. The Italian Grand Prix had the highest viewership of the year with 112 million viewers (20% YoY). Formula 1's social media channels continue to grow significantly, with the total number of followers now at 24.9 million (32.9% YoY). Interactions on social media platforms increased by 82%.
Formula 1's digital landscapes enjoyed a fruitful season, going above and beyond 1 billion page views (1.124 billion), seeing an impressive increase of 82.3% in comparison to the previous year. The website, F1.com, recorded 409.8 page views, an increase of 22.9%, whereas the official F1 App experienced a three-fold rise of 152.3% to reach 714.2 million views. Both platforms witnessed colossal growth in video views and minutes watched, up 45.2% and 19.5% to 54 million and 84.5 million, respectively. Additionally, the number of unique users that accessed the F1 sites was 55.9 million, rising by 16.3%, of which 52.1 million were on the website and 3.7 million on the app. The average number of users for race week increased by almost 25%.
Even the official Formula 1 podcast, Beyond the Grid, managed to continue its triumphant run in its second season, accumulating 43 episodes that garnered up to 15 million listens in 2019.
Formula 1's fan base in the 27 tracked markets persisted beyond 500 million during 2019. A youthful trend is emerging with 62% of new fans joining in the last two years being under the age of 35. China has the highest number of fans (81.3 million), followed by Brazil (54.7 million), Mexico (45.5 million), USA (34.6 million), and India (31.1 million).
