The first winter election in nearly 100 years will be held this week, with voters going to the polls.

This year's general election is the first to be held in December since 1923, and millions of people across the country will be voting throughout the day.

The polls will open at 7 a.m. on Thursday, with a variety of different venues across the UK serving as polling stations for the day.

You certainly can, but bringing your card with you may expedite the process.

If you don't have it, just remember your name and address - when you arrive at the polling station, staff will ask for your information, cross your name off the list, and stamp your ballot paper.

The paper, which includes the names of the candidates running in your district, will then be handed to you.

If you are in Northern Ireland, you must bring photographic identification.

You should have received a polling card by now if you are registered to vote.

This indicates where you will need to go to vote.

If you have not received one, you should contact electoral services, but you do not need to bring it with you to vote.

Polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and you will be asked to confirm your name and address upon arrival.

You will be given a ballot paper on which you will mark an X to the right of the candidate for whom you wish to vote.

If you haven't received your card and don't know where your nearest polling station is, go to wheredoivote.co.uk and enter your postcode to find the address of your nearest station.

Polling stations will be open throughout the day to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to vote.

They are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The results from all 650 constituencies may take up to 24 hours to be declared, with the final total possibly coming as late as Friday evening, December 13th.
