Discover the Stunning Time it Takes for an Average Raindrop to Touch Down!
Wales is infamous for its abundance of rain, but the Welsh have learned to adapt to the inclement weather. The rain serves as a constant companion, greeting us on our journey to work, joining us during mundane tasks like packing our cars at the supermarket, or interrupting our summer walks with our pets. Have you ever pondered how long it takes a raindrop to touch down? The Met Office has offered some interesting facts about rainfall, including how long it takes for a raindrop to reach the ground, and the location of the world's rainiest place.
It is difficult to calculate the exact time required for a raindrop to hit the ground, as the time depends on the height from which the drop falls and the size of the raindrop itself. However, according to the Met Office, assuming that the cloud base height is around 2,500 feet, it takes just over two minutes for a raindrop to hit the ground, as raindrops fall at an average speed of roughly 14 mph. Larger raindrops can fall as fast as 20 mph, while it takes smaller drops up to seven minutes to land.
The Met Office also commented that there is no definitive answer when it comes to determining whether running or walking in the rain will get you wetter. Research suggests that factors such as an individual's height-to-breadth ratio, wind direction, and raindrop size can influence the outcome. The Journal of European Physics conducted a study by Professor Bocci, concluding that running is generally the best option.
The rain offers more interesting facts, such as its distinct aroma when landing on dusty or clay soil. The wettest day in the UK was recorded as December 5, 2015, in Cumbria, when Honister Pass saw 341.4 mm of rain in a single day (0000-2359) after Storm Desmond hit the UK. It is also worth noting that the crown for the wettest place globally goes to Mawsynram in the Maghalaya State of India, even though most people believe it to be Wales. Situated 1400 m high in the Garo Hills, south of the Himalayas, Mawsynram's proximity to the Bay of Bengal accounts for its frequent and severe downpours.
