Cooking Instructions for Romantic Cabbage
Learn how to cook sweetheart cabbage (also known as pointed cabbage or hispi cabbage). This is the simplest and most likely most delicious method of preparation.
Cabbage is one of the most delicious vegetables. I adored it as a child, and I adore it even more now. And one of the simplest and best ways to prepare this vegetable is with this sweetheart cabbage recipe. If you want to try something else, try the Simple White Cabbage Salad, Fried Cabbage with Bacon, or Stewed Cabbage; they're all delicious.

What is the definition of sweetheart cabbage?
This type, also known as pointed or hispi cabbage or sugarloaf, is green and has a pointed head. The heads are not particularly large, weighing between 800 and 1500 g/ 1 7 and 3 Most of the time, 3 lbs
This brassica variety is softer and sweeter in flavor than green or white cabbage, and it's more robust than napa cabbage, making it ideal for salads and quick cooking in general. You'll love the green leaves fried, steamed, stir-fried, grilled, or roasted.
Another advantage is that it is one of the easiest types of brassica to digest. It's also low in calories and fat, with vitamins C, K, B6, folate, manganese, and calcium.

How to Get It
Look for heads that are clean and crisp. They should be bright green in color and firm when touched. The outside leaves may be slightly damaged (due to transport and storage), but don't worry about it; simply remove them before cooking. Avoid wilted-looking cabbage heads; they've been sitting around for too long.
How to keep it
- Sweetheart cabbage has a softer texture than white cabbage and does not keep as long. While a white one can be kept in the fridge for weeks, the pointed one should only be kept for about a week. Place it in the refrigerator's vegetable compartment and check it every day or so to ensure it still looks good.
- Wedges: Once cut, wrap the leftover wedges/pieces in cling film and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Chop it and blanch it in boiling water for 3 minutes before freezing. Drain thoroughly, cool, and place in freezer bags. Refrigerate for up to 6 months.

How to Cook Pointed Cabbage
- Make use of a large, sharp chef's knife.
- Remove and dispose of the outer leaves. Rinse and dry the head with cold water.
- (1) Cut the head in half (1)
- Next, cut a V-shaped circle around the core to remove it. We used to love eating this fresh sweet core as kids. Otherwise, throw it out (2).
- Cut the halves in half (3).
- (4) Shred the cabbage wedges by cutting them diagonally into thin slices.

What do you need for this recipe?
- Cabbage: one small head weighing approximately 900 g/ 2 lb If you have a large head of cabbage, store the rest in the fridge as directed above and use the crunchy leaves to make salads, soups, or a vegetable stir fry.
- Unsalted butter is preferred.
- Olive oil
- Soy sauce: this is why you should use unsalted butter; soy sauce is quite salty.
- Other ingredients: black pepper, salt to taste, and optional parsley

How to Prepare Sweetheart Cabbage
- As previously stated, shred the vegetable.
- In a large pan, melt the butter and add the olive oil, preferably a cast-iron or nonstick pan. Allow the butter to foam briefly (1).
- (2) Add cabbage and coat thoroughly.
- Cook for 8 minutes on medium heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low if the vegetable slices begin to stick to the bottom of the pan. Cook until lightly browned; it should be crispy-tender but not too soft or mushy(3).
- Pour in the soy sauce. Cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Taste and season with salt if necessary; it probably won't be necessary. If desired, season with freshly ground black pepper and chopped parsley.

How to Modify the Recipe
This is the basic recipe that I use the most. It tastes fantastic, and despite its simplicity, I don't need anything else. Its simplicity also makes it ideal as a side dish for a variety of other dishes. You can, however, add additional ingredients if desired.
- Fried cabbage with bacon is both popular and delicious. 1 small onion and 3-4 bacon slices, chopped Cook until the bacon fat renders and the onions are golden in a large frying pan. Stir in 2 finely chopped garlic cloves for 1 minute. Continue with the recipe after you've added the cabbage.
- Season with red chili flakes or cayenne pepper to taste. I frequently sprinkle with caraway seeds.
- Remove the soy sauce and replace it with other spices, such as dried thyme, summer savory, or fresh dill or parsley. Consider adding 1-2 teaspoons of good balsamic vinegar at the end (to taste); I love it.

What goes with fried sweetheart cabbage?
- Serve with mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes, rice, or pasta as is. Simple, vegan, healthy, and delectable
- Pork and wine: a match made in heaven Serve with pork belly slices, cast-iron pork tenderloin, milk-marinated pork chops, or meatballs and rice.
- Sausages: Another delicious combination. The pointed cabbage goes well with any type of sausage dish, such as Brats in the Oven.
- Combine it with Cast-Iron Chicken Breast, Whole Roasted Chicken, Roasted Chicken Thighs, or Chicken Breast Patties. It also goes well with baked turkey legs or roasted turkey drumsticks.
- Lamb: The sautéed vegetables go well with slow-cooked lamb shoulder or baked lamb chops.
- Serve it with Chickpea Meatballs, Broccoli and Cauliflower Balls, or Baked Cauliflower Potato Patties to keep it vegetarian.
How to Keep and Reheat
- In the fridge, sauteed hispi cabbage keeps well for 3-4 days in an airtight container.
- Allow to cool at room temperature before freezing. Freeze in freezer bags or airtight containers for up to 3 months. Refrigerate or defrost on the counter.
- Reheat in a (nonstick) pan on the stovetop. Add a splash of water and stir frequently until the food is hot.
