I'm moving and still require a TV license.If you are relocating within the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, you can simply transfer your license up to three months before your move to your new address It is not necessary to cancel it.

I'd like to transfer my license to someone else.You can transfer your TV Licence to someone who lives at your address and is covered by your current licence. We will need your written permission to transfer the license. Please contact us at:

In your letter, please include the following information:
- your name,
- address,
- TV license number, as well as
- the name of the new license holder
If the other person moves in after you have left, you should cancel your license because it is no longer required at that address. The new resident will then need to purchase their own license. Please let us know when you moved out of your current address.
I'm moving into a nursing home.Check to see if your nursing home already has a TV license that will cover you. If this occurs, you should cancel your current license and you may be eligible for a refund. If you haven't already, you should. transfer your license to your new location
If you are over the age of 75 and eligible for a free TV license If you are due a refund, you will be issued one as part of the application process.
- If you paid for your licence with a Direct Debit or TV Licensing payment card, you may be eligible for a refund. If this is the case, your license will be automatically cancelled once your refund is approved.
- If you paid for your license all at once, your administrator will fill out a form on your behalf. They should send a letter to TV Licensing, Darlington DL98 1TL.
Even if you are not eligible for a refund, you can still cancel your license. Please request that the administrator write to us with:
- your TV license number (if applicable),
- your previous address,
- the date you entered your nursing home, and
- confirmation of your age and retired status, or confirmation of your disability
We will cancel your license once we receive this information in the form of a signed letter from the person in charge of your scheme.
What if my new care home or lodging does not qualify?
If your care home or accommodation's license does not cover you, you may need to obtain your own. In this case, you should transfer your license to your new location.

I'm leaving the country.If you are no longer going to live in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man and will not need your licence again before it expires, you can cancel it and request a refund.

I'm relocating to a residence that already has a TV license.If someone at your new address already has a TV Licence that covers you, you may cancel your licence up to two weeks before you move.
If the other person is your spouse, partner, family member, joint tenancy, or joint mortgage holder, you should be covered. You will need your own license if you have a single tenancy agreement or are a lodger at the new address. In this case, you should transfer your license to your new location.
I no longer watch or record TV on any channel through any TV service, nor do I watch live streaming services or use BBC iPlayer.You can cancel your license and receive a refund if, before your license expires, you will not be:
- watching or recording television on any channel using any TV service (e.g. g Sky, Virgin Media, Freeview, and Freesat)
- live streaming on streaming services (e.g. g All 4, ITVX, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now, Sky Go), or
- utilizing BBC iPlayer*
This is true for any device, including a television, computer, laptop, phone, tablet, game console, or digital box.

How do I stop my Direct Debit?If you want to cancel your Direct Debit, please do not:
- requesting a refund
- apply for a new type of license, or
- alter the payment scheme
We will cancel your Direct Debit on your behalf.
Cancelling your Direct Debit does not cancel your licence, so you will continue to receive the reminder letters we send to unlicensed addresses unless we hear from you.

I'd like to apply for a different kind of license.
You do not need to cancel your Direct Debit when applying for a free TV licence or a blind licence. When we process your application, we will cancel it on your behalf and refund any money owed to you.

Request a refund
I am 75 or older, or I live with someone who is.If you (or someone you live with) are 75 or older, you may be eligible for a free TV license. You can apply for a free TV license for everyone who lives at that address. You can cancel your old license once you have this one. This ensures that your address is not unlicensed for an extended period of time.
Anyone over the age of 74 who receives Pension Credit can apply for a free TV license. Pension Credit can be in the name of the license holder or in the name of their partner if they are a couple living at the same address.
If you or your partner do not qualify for Pension Credit, you must continue to pay for your license.

If you are over the age of 75, you will be issued a refund as part of your application.
The licensee has passed away.If a television license is still required at the address,
Anyone living with the deceased licence holder will continue to be covered by the current TV Licence.
If it is a free TV license, it will be valid until the license expires. The person who is still residing at the address will then be required to renew the license.
- If the individual is 74 and receives Pension Credit, they may be eligible for a free TV license. They can apply when they reach the age of 74, and we will automatically adjust their payments.
- If the individual is 75 years old or older and receives Pension Credit, they will be eligible to apply for their own free TV license.
- If the person is not 75 or older at the time, they simply need to give us their name when renewing their license.
If the licence is not a free TV licence, please contact us to notify us that the license holder has died. Please also provide us with the name of the person who is still residing at the address so that we can transfer the license to them.
If a television license is no longer required
If no one else lives at the address and the license is no longer required, it can be cancelled, and a refund may be due to the licence holder's personal representative.
We only need the license holder's title, initial, last name, address, and licence number (if available).

I have two drivers' licenses for the same address.If you have two licenses at the same address, you can cancel one and receive a refund.
Please keep in mind that some addresses require more than one license, such as those with lodgers or tenants for instance
You may also require an additional license because the type of license has changed. For example, you may now be eligible for a free television license or a blind concessionary television license
Cancel your television license
When will I be able to get a refund?You may request a refund for your TV license if:
- You will not need your license again before it expires, and you have at least one month remaining on it OR
- Your license was only valid for less than two years*.
*If you are eligible for a concession for being over 75 or blind, you can apply at any time and for any length of time remaining on your license.
You may request a refund up to 14 days before the date on which you no longer require the TV Licence.

How long will it take for my refund to arrive?We aim to process and refund your application within 21 days of receiving it. Any refund due to you will be issued in the form of a check or a BACS transfer directly into your bank account.
If we need to contact you for more information, your refund may be delayed.
How do you figure out how much I owe you?Calculating exact refund amounts can be difficult. However, we will do it for you. We'll carefully review the information you provide and let you know whether we can offer you a refund and how much it will be.
If we approve your refund, your license will be automatically cancelled. You can still cancel your licence if you are not eligible for a refund.

What proof will I need to provide?You may be required to provide evidence to back up your request. The dates on the evidence must correspond to the time period for which you are requesting the refund.

This must be the section of the tenancy agreement that shows the tenant(s), the landlord's or letting agent's name and address, and the address of the property you are leaving. It should also include the tenancy's start and end dates, as well as the termination clause.
This must include the dates when the address was unoccupied.
This must include the date the property was sold. e the completion date, and be printed on official solicitor's letterhead
We can only accept water bills as utility bills. It must include the phrase "Your final bill," the date you were billed, and the address of the property you have left.
This could be a bank statement, a credit card statement, or the license(s) for your television.
This must include your college or university's term dates.
This must be on MOD letterhead, signed by the Senior Officer, and include the date of departure or termination from the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, or Channel Islands.
This must be on official letterhead and include the holiday home's open and close dates. This confirms that you will not be watching or recording programs while they are broadcast on television or live on an online TV service at both properties at the same time.
This must be signed on solicitor's letterhead and include the date the circumstance became effective.
This must include the date the mail began being redirected as well as the name of the license holder. It must also display the old and new addresses.
This must be signed on hospital or care home letterhead and must include the date of admission.
Proof that someone aged 75 or older who is eligible for a free TV licence is now living at the address, including the date they moved in.
You can still request a refund. However, if you can't provide any evidence to back up your claim and are eligible for a refund, you'll only be reimbursed for up to three months. We will normally process your refund within 30 days of receiving your application.

Can I get a refund for an already expired license?If you are requesting a refund for an expired license, less than two years must have passed since the license expiry date.
This does not apply if you are over the age of 75 or blind. You can apply for a refund for any remaining time on your license, regardless of when you became eligible for an over 75 or blind concession.
How do I find out when my television license expires?
You can access your license and sign in online. To do so, enter your license number, last name, and postcode.

What if I only require a TV license for a portion of the year?You will still need to purchase a TV license. A TV license can be purchased online.
We can, however, issue a refund for any unused months on your license. You must have at least one full month remaining on your license before it expires.
I've already been refunded. Can I recoup the difference?No Once a refund has been applied for and processed, we do not reconsider claims or change refund amounts.

You may want to send the stamps by special delivery because it is similar to sending money through the mail.
Please allow 28 days for a refund cheque for the value of your stamps to arrive.
