When should you reset your boiler?
Modern boilers have a safety feature that locks them down when there is a problem. This makes modern boilers extremely safe, but it can result in no central heating or hot water. Common boiler issues that result in a lockout include:
- A problem with the system
- Unsafe operating conditions, such as a low gas supply
If your boiler has locked out, an error code will appear on the display screen.
Once the problem has been resolved, you must reset the boiler.
Resetting a Boiler
All boilers have a reset button, but its location and operation differ from model to model.
If you can't find the button, consult the owner's manual that came with your boiler. This should also include instructions on how to reset your boiler. In most cases, however, once you've located the reset button, you'll need to:
- Press and hold the button (for 1 to 5 seconds).
- Wait for the boiler to ignite (this may take some time).
Avoid pressing the button multiple times as this could exacerbate the problem.
If the boiler has reset, the flame will ignite, the error code will disappear, and you may see a green light (rather than red or orange). If the boiler has not been reset, you should contact a qualified engineer who can locate the problem.
Not only do boilers reset in the same way, as you might expect. Choose your manufacturer to learn how to reset your boiler:

Resetting a Worcester boiler
If the boiler starts working again, the reset was successful. However, your Worcester boiler may also notify you that it has reset when:
- The reset button stops flashing.
- On the digital display, the word'reset' appears alongside a tick.
- The error code has stopped flashing.
If your Worcester boiler has a problem, it must be repaired before you can reset it. Examine the Worcester Boiler Problems and Repair Advice.
Why is my boiler not working?
There are numerous reasons why your boiler may have shut down, but some are more common than others.
Water pressure
If the water pressure is too low or too high, your boiler may stop working entirely, rather than just lockout. You can check the water pressure by looking at the pressure gauge; aim to keep it around 1 bar.
Failure to ignite
Many boilers will lockout after three failed ignition attempts. There are several possible explanations for this (e.g. g blocked burner, insufficient gas pressure) and you should consult with a heating engineer.
Heat exchanger is obstructed
A buildup of limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger can restrict water flow and cause kettling. It was given this name because the obstruction can produce sounds similar to a kettle.
Some of the problems you can fix yourself, but if you have any doubts, contact a qualified engineer who will be able to get your boiler back up and running. You can get free quotes from up to three trusted engineers in your area using Boiler Guide, and you can compare and choose the best one.
After resetting, the boiler will not turn on.
You've fixed the problem, reset the boiler, and are almost ready to restart it when it fails to ignite. In this case, you'll need to look beyond the problem that the fault code indicated.
- If the original fault code wasn't about the boiler pressure, check the pressure gauge to see if it's too high or too low - the needle should be around 1 bar.
- Check that the boiler is receiving power. You'll notice because the display screen will be illuminated. This is especially common following a power outage, so check your fuse box.
Get a more dependable boiler.
A boiler that needs to be reset on a regular basis most likely has an ongoing fault in the system, such as:
- A broken pump
- Leaks in the system
- A plate heat exchanger that has become clogged
- An electric component of an appliance that needs to be replaced
If you have to reset your boiler, it could be on its last legs. So it's time to think about getting a new one.
