You will sit on a panel of three Justices of the Peace and render decisions on court cases brought before you. You must commit to 26 half-day court appearances per calendar year. Your employers are legally required to allow this, but they have the option of determining whether it is paid or unpaid leave.

While no qualifications are required to become a magistrate, you must meet some basic requirements. You must:

• Be willing and able to serve as a magistrate for 5 years.

How are magistrates chosen?

What kind of training does a magistrate get?

This training will be provided to you during your first year as a magistrate. You will also be mentored by an experienced magistrate. You will be given consolidation training at the end of your first year to ensure there are no gaps in your knowledge and to demonstrate that you are still suitable for the role.

You may also be trained to be the Presiding Justice. This will be geared toward preparing you to serve as a court chairperson. Other training opportunities, such as those focusing on local issues, updated training, and new training courses, may also be available.

You do not get paid as a magistrate. Your participation is entirely voluntary. However, you can claim reasonable expenses for travel and other expenses incurred as a magistrate. You will be expected to work 13 days per year, or 26 half days, and your employer must allow you to do so. They are not required to provide you with paid leave during this time, and if you lose earnings as a result, you may be eligible for a loss allowance at a set rate.

Who can't be a judge?
